SUMMARY:Innovate UK - Hot topic: New technologies for high‑temperature heating in manufacturing
DESCRIPTION:Want to explore how cutting‑edge heating technologies can reduce energy consumption\, lower operational costs\, and accelerate the transition toward net zero manufacturing? \nIndustrial processes account for 18% of the UK’s total energy consumption\, and more than half of that energy is used for heating. Many manufacturing processes require high temperature operations (above 150°C) to achieve required material performance\, but these processes are energy intensive and heavily reliant on fossil fuels such as natural gas. \nAs pressures increase to reduce operating costs\, strengthen energy resilience\, and lower carbon emissions\, new high temperature heating technologies are emerging as credible alternatives. \nThis webinar brings together expert perspectives to explore how these innovations could transform UK manufacturing. \nWho should attend:\n\nManufacturing leaders seeking energy saving technologies\nProcess engineers and technical specialists\nSustainability and net zero managers\nInnovators developing industrial heating technologies\nAcademics and researchers working in thermal processess\nPolicy and decarbonisation professionals\n\nWhy this topic matters\nHigh‑temperature heating is often the largest single energy cost for manufacturers. It relies on established fossil fuel infrastructure with volatile pricing and must meet stringent product performance requirements. At the same time\, the sector faces increasing pressure to adopt lower‑carbon alternatives. New solutions\, including plasma\, microwave\, alternative burners\, and thermal batteries\, are emerging to support industrial decarbonisation. These technologies and their deployment considerations will be explored during this session. \nJoin us to learn about:\n\nThe role high‑temperature processes play in industrial energy consumption\nEmerging heating technologies with potential for decarbonisation\nBarriers and enablers for industrial adoption\nPractical deployment considerations for manufacturers\nOpportunities for collaboration and innovation support

SUMMARY:Remote Operations in Challenging Environments Training Course
DESCRIPTION:What does it take to maintain or decommission a plant using remotely operated robots and cameras?\nThis course aims to provide managers\, designers and operators with a broad view of the Remote Operations specialism including: \n\ndesign and specification of remotely operated equipment\nrules for tool design\nsoftware infrastructure must-haves for efficiency\, safety and accountability\nrisk reduction measures in high consequence environments\nbuilding a remote operations team – people\, processes and culture\nplant design considerations\n\nWho this course is for?\nThis course is designed for professionals involved in strategy\, design and operations from organisations: \n\nat the concept design stage – seeking to understand how to ‘design for remote’ and its impact on commercial viability\nwithout remote operations experience – needing to learn how to develop a functioning system and build a successful team\naiming to operate ‘safer\, faster\, more cost‑effectively’ – looking to introduce human-in-the-loop remote operations\nlooking to upskill their workforce in remote operations while leveraging existing remote infrastructure and facilities\n\nOur approach\nInteractive and engaging courses: discussions and hands-on sessions reinforce the core principles. \nUse of industry-leading robotic equipment at RACE for firsthand experience. \nUniversal application of principles: While the principles taught have been developed in the fusion sector\, they are relevant to any environment where remote equipment is used and mistakes could be costly. \n  \nRemote handling at UKAEA\nRACE is the UKAEA’s centre for Remote Applications in Challenging Environments. Its Remote Handling Team has been remotely maintaining the Joint European Torus (JET)\, a fusion machine located in Oxfordshire\, since the 1980s. Currently\, in its decommissioning phase\, JET is being stripped from the inside out using teleoperated equipment deployed on robotic booms. \nWith over 30\,000 hours of in-vessel operational experience\, RACE provides training and consultancy services to remote handling teams in the UK\, the US\, Sweden and Fukushima in Japan\, spanning the fusion\, big science and nuclear decommissioning sectors. \nUtilising robotics to perform tasks ensures the safety of personnel by keeping them out of hazardous environments\, speeds up task completion and reduces costs. Such specialised experience is rare in the industry due to the time required to develop it. Through this course\, we aim to share our knowledge and equip professionals across various sectors with the essential skills for remote operations.

SUMMARY:WIRE member discussion - Innovation For Good Growth
DESCRIPTION:Innovation doesn’t always have to mean a huge breakthrough. \nSometimes\, it’s about spotting something that isn’t working\, asking why\, trying something different and learning from the result. \nThat’s the thinking behind Innovating for Good Growth. \nBy focusing on opportunity\, value and capability\, businesses can identify where small changes could make a meaningful difference — and then use evidence to understand what actually works. \nWe’ll be exploring this approach at The Wire Live on 15 October\, looking at how innovation and process improvement can support better outcomes for businesses\, customers and communities. \nIf you’re interested in turning ideas into practical improvements\, come and join us.
