Celebrating Innovation: Culham Campus with 60 Years of Scientific Excellence
Next February, Culham Innovation Centre will mark an incredible milestone—25 years of supporting innovators, entrepreneurs, and pioneering businesses. As we celebrate this achievement, it’s impossible not to reflect on the unique setting that makes our work so impactful: Culham Campus, which itself celebrates 60 years of ground breaking science and technology.
A Campus Built for Discovery
Culham Campus began its journey in 1965 as the UK’s national centre for fusion research. Originally a Royal Naval Air Station, the site was transformed into a hub for plasma physics and fusion energy, a technology that promises clean, sustainable power for future generations. Today, Culham is home to the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), the Joint European Torus (JET) experiment, and cutting-edge programmes like STEP Fusion, which aims to deliver the UK’s first prototype fusion power plant by the 2040s.
With over 3,000 people on site, 45+ organisations, and a thriving Fusion Technology Cluster, Culham Campus is more than a research facility, it’s a dynamic ecosystem where science, engineering, and entrepreneurship collide.
Our Role in This Story
Since opening in 2001, Culham Innovation Centre has been a launchpad for over 150 early-stage businesses, many of which have gone on to achieve remarkable success in sectors like fusion energy, advanced materials, and AI. Companies such as Tokamak Energy began their journey here, leveraging the proximity to UKAEA and the collaborative spirit of the campus to accelerate their growth. Today, these businesses employ hundreds and contribute to the UK’s ambition to be a global science and technology superpower.
Our mission has always been clear: to provide flexible workspace, expert business support, and a vibrant community for innovators. Being located at the heart of Culham Campus means our members benefit from unparalleled access to world-class research, networking opportunities, and a culture of collaboration that drives progress.
Why This Matters
The synergy between Culham Innovation Centre and Culham Campus is a powerful example of how infrastructure and community can fuel innovation. As the campus looks ahead to the next 60 years, developing fusion energy, robotics, and advanced materials, we remain committed to nurturing the next generation of businesses that will turn these scientific breakthroughs into commercial realities.
Join the Celebration
As we approach our 25th anniversary, we’ll be sharing stories from our innovators, hosting events, and looking forward to the exciting future of science and enterprise at Culham. Together, we’re shaping technologies that could change the world.
